UNLV vs. Nevada, Reno Revisited: The UNLV volleyball team (10-5) defeated the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (7-6) by a 3-0 margin on Monday evening at the Cox Pavilion. The win gave the Rebels an 8-7 edge over their in-state rivals. UNLV took the match with scores of 30-20, 30-24, 30-27.

The win snapped UNLV's two-match losing streak from this past weekend. By winning in a 3-0 sweep, the Rebels have now won six matches by that figure this season. By defeating UNR, the Rebels closed out their 2006 non-conference slate with a 9-3 mark.

In game one, UNR held a slight lead until UNLV evened up the score at 7-7. From that point on the Rebels never looked back, en route to the 30-20 win.

Game two was played evenly by both squads until UNLV broke open the 15-15 game. The Rebels rattled off 15 of the final 24 points to take the frame, 30-24.

The Wolf Pack came on strong in the middle of the third. Trailing the Rebels early, UNR fought back to knot the score by winning five straight points to pull even at 21-21. With the tie, UNLV head coach Allison Keeley called a timeout to regroup her squad. The pause worked as the Rebels came out to score five of the next six points to cause UNR to call for a timeout. After their timeout, the Wolf Pack came out strong and scored three straight points - two from UNLV attacking errors - to pull within one at 26-25 which forced another UNLV timeout. After the break, the Rebels won three consecutive points to go up 29-25. With the score 29-27, UNLV got a kill from Maria Aladjova that was misplayed by UNR's blockers to close outthe game and match.

The Rebels out hit the Wolf Pack .167 to .077. UNLV hit for a game-high .286 in the first, but followed that up with a .053 in the second and a .152 in the third. UNR's best hitting performance came in the first game with a .098. UNR's hitting declined each game with a .075 in the second and .061 in the third.

UNLV was led by 20 assists and 10 digs by Kristin Koochi for her first-career double-double. Koochi split setting duties with Melody Nua, who collected 17 assists, as well. Coincidentally, with Koochi leading the team in assists, it ended Nua's run of 44 matches of dishing out the most Rebel assists in those matches.

Maria Aladjova and Brittani Lumsden tallied double-digits in kills with them nailing 16 and 10, respectively. Lumsden also held the match-high in hitting with her .455 percentage mixing in only one error in 22 attempts. Camille Cunningham had a match-high 14 digs and was closely followed by Jada Walker's 13.

Race To 10: The 2006 Rebels are achieving numerous feats this season, thus far. Already the team has reeled off a six-match winning streak that ranks as the third-longest in the program's history (since it was brought back in 1996). The team won eight of its first 10 matches for the best start for that time period. Now, the team has placed itself second amongst squads trying to win 10-matches the quickest.

With the win over Nevada, Reno on Monday, the Rebels pushed their record to 10-5, which trails 1998's squad who reached the feat in 13 matches.

Three games and Out: Since the volleyball program was brought back in 1996, the program's longest streak of consecutive 3-0 wins was three, which was achieved in 1997, 1999 (twice) and 2004. The 2006 Rebels eclipsed the three-match 3-0 mark and created a new one to beat at four straight. On Sept. 2, in Pullman, Wash., at the Baden Cougar Challenge, UNLV blanked UC Davis and Boise State. On Sept. 8-9, at the UNLV Invitational, the Rebels skunked UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge. The Rebels nearly made it a five-match streak until Xavier took game three after trailing UNLV 0-2.

UNLV's last two wins (Nevada, Reno and UC Riverside) came by 3-0 margins, which gives the team five 3-0 sweeps in its last eight victories. The most 3-0 sweeps in any give season came in 1998 when the squad won 11.
