UNLV vs. Nevada, Reno Postgame Quotes 9-30-06
UNLV Head Coach Mike Sanford
Overall on the game:
"Obviously that was very disappointing. I am shocked actually that we played like that. I think we are a better football team than that.
"The thing got away from us early. They make the big play and whenever we started to get something going we would turn the ball over."
On the play of the defense:
"Our defense at times played halfway decent. The statistics are not indicative of what happened in the game, from a point standpoint."
On committing four turnovers in the game:
"We made mistakes at the wrong time and had turnovers at the wrong time and those turned directly into points."
"The thing that is amazing is that those turnovers were on positive-yardage plays. The ball was punched out from behind."
On the play of the offense:
"We have a long ways to go, we have a lot of work to do and we have to get better. Rocky is not the issue here. It goes much beyond that."
On the record-breaking crowd:
"I am very upset. The players love having the crowd. It was a great crowd and I am very disappointed."
Nevada, Reno Notes
UNR head coach Chris Ault:
"To me it means a lot. It means more for the kids. It is a great rivalry. I thought our defense played exceptional. To step up against that spread was great."
Our defense played fantastic all game long. Especially, when the defense had to stop someone like Hinds (UNLV quarterback Rocky Hinds). We felt confident in the way our defense was playing. We played structured.
We (defense) played really well. Much better than we did against Northwestern (a UNR in, 31-21 on Sept. 22). This team (UNLV) has more speed than Northwestern. Our defense needed to play well and we got the ball.
It's tough to win on the road. And to win on the road here is a great accomplishment. It is a great win. When you come on the road in a rivalry game anything can happen.
