COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In its first Mountain West road meet of the season, the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving team pulled off a split, with the Rebel men (4-2, 3-1 MWC) suffering their first conference loss of the year, 175-125 at Air Force on Friday afternoon. The UNLV women (3-3, 3-2 MWC) meanwhile dominated the Falcon women with a 180-100 win.
UNLV entered the meet with a 3-0 record in the men's standings, but after claiming a win in the first event, Air Force won five of the next seven and slowly increased its lead throughout the meet. The Falcons would end the day with a total of 10 wins through the 16 events. A pair of double-event winners led the Rebels. Jonas Andersson won both breaststroke events, swimming the 100 in 56.00, and the 200 in 2:07.17. Brandon Nelms meanwhile was victorious in the 50 (20.93) and 100 (45.66) free. Devin Phillips swam a first place time of 1:52.92 in the 200 back, while he also leadoff the first place 200 medley relay team (1:34.39), that also featured Andersson, Tiger Christian, and Nelms.
The Rebels won the first 12 women's events to jump out to a big lead, and exhibitioned the last two swims on the way to their third MWC win of the year. UNLV was paced by four double-event winners. Lani Seaman won the 500 (5:12.21) and 1000 (10:35.19) free, Amanda Weinbrecht claimed first in the 100 (59.75) and 200 back (2:10.45), Bailey Kuestermeyer claimed the 200 fly (2:14.50) and 200 breast (2:24.40), while Katie Wronn was first in the 50 (24.01) and 100 free (53.00). Marva Harpak also won the 200 free in (1:57.46), while Kim Bonney was first in the 100 breast (1:07.12), and Caitlin Kelly won the 1-meter board with a score of 256.41. Weinbrecht, Kim Bonney, Marina Sandback, and Wronn also won the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay in 1:47.22.
Both Rebel teams will remain on the road as they face Wyoming on Saturday morning at 11 am in Laramie.
