Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Junior Nicholas Paterson scored his first goal of the season eight minutes into the second overtime to give the UNLV men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over 21st-ranked New Mexico on Saturday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win over the current Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leader marked the third straight season UNLV has posted a win over a ranked team, and improved its record to 6-7-2, 2-4 in the MPSF. New Mexico meanwhile dropped to 9-4-1, 4-1-1 in league play.

Playing two weeks after the Lobos earned a 2-1 win over UNLV in Albuquerque, the visitors looked to make it two straight wins as they scored the first goal just under two minutes into the game. Following a Rebel foul, Diego Barrera took free kick and sent a high ball into the box that was headed into the net by Simon Ejdemyr for a 1-0 lead at the 1:44 mark.

UNLV would tie the game in the 31st minute thanks to team-leading scorer Lamer Neagle. The junior forward drove into the box from the right side and dribbled through three defenders before unleashing a hard shot to the far left post to make the score 1-1 off his eighth goal of the season.

Both teams then had several good chances over the remaining of regulation, but the game would go into overtime as the goalies from both sides made key saves. Nearing the end of the second overtime, UNLV went on the attack and got the ball to Stephen Sifuentes, who dribbled around the defense before finding Paterson in the middle of the box. Paterson made a quick turnaround and finding himself unmarked, blasted off a shot to the top right corner for the net, over the hands Lobo goalkeeper Mike Graczyk.

Rebel goalkeeper Calvin Bailey finished with six saves in goal, while Graczyk was credited with three. New Mexico held a 19-12 shot advantage, and took 10 corner kicks to just four for UNLV.

UNLV will play its final two home games of the season next weekend, hosting San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 pm, followed by a Sunday, Nov. 11 afternoon contest against Sacramento State at 1 pm. Both games will be at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
