LAS VEGAS - The UNLV's men's and women's swimming and diving teams had several strong swims, including two first-place finishes, on the first day of action in the 2007 UNLV Winter Invite at Buchanen Natatorium.
The highlight of the night for the women came in the very first individual event, as junior Bailey Kuestermeyer claimed the 500 free in a time of 4:57.37. Marva Harpak also scored in the 500 free, swimming a time of 5:06.43. Two Rebels posted top-four finishes in the 200 IM, with Lisa Gillespie in third (2:07.27), and Marina Sandback fourth (2:07.29). The last individual event was the 50 free, where Sandback finished in third with 23.89, and Richard Hortness fifth in 20.95. The Rebel women's 200 free relay placed third, with the team of Megan Hunt-Higgins, Madison Rousell, Harpak, and Sandback swimming of time of 1:36.18. UNLV also was second in the 400 medley relay, with Amanda Weinbrecht, Kuestermeyer, Sandback, and Hunt-Higgins touching the wall in 3:50.35.
For the UNLV men, two Rebels scored in the 500 free, with Kier Maitland swimming 4:34.18 for fourth place, while John Mendoza was eighth in 4:41.69. Devin Phillips was second in the 200 IM in 1:51.62, while Richard Hortness placed fifth in the 50 free, with a time of 20.95. UNLV claimed the men's 400 medley relay, with Phillips, Thomas Andersson, Peter Lorring, and Hortness finishing in 3:26.04 for first. The Rebels' 200 free relay team finished second meanwhile, with Horntess, Phillips, Calan Eldridge, and Thomas Andolfsson turning in a time of 1:23.48.
The three-day meet, featuring a total of 19 teams and 500 swimmers, continues on Sunday. The prelims start at 9 am, with the finals beginning at 6 pm.
