For the second straight day the No. 6 UNLV men's golf team shot a 7-under 281 as a team and the Rebels are tied for 12th following Friday's second round of the 2007 NCAA West Regional, which is being played at ASU's Karsten Golf Course.
With temperatures at 100 degrees for most of the afternoon on the par-72, 7,057 yard course, Seung-su Han and Jarred Texter both recorded sub-par rounds for the Rebels, which have 36-hole team total of 14-under 562. This year's regional marks UNLV's 19th consecutive appearance at an NCAA Regional and its 18th appearance in the West. UNLV's 2006 East Regional appearance was its only time in a region other than the West.
No. 4 UCLA remained in the lead and after two rounds the Bruins have a team score of 35-under 541, which is just one stroke better than South Carolina's 34-under 542. Those two schools have large leads over the rest of the field, as No. 10 USC and No. 18 Arizona State are tied for third at 26-under 550. Benjamin Alvarado of Arizona State and Jamie Lovemark of USC share the individual lead heading into the final round, as both have a score of 12-under 132.
Han rolled in seven birdies on his round, including four of the first five holes he played after making the turn, on his way to a round of 5-under 67. His strong round vaulted him up the leaderboard and he is currently tied for 30th with a two-round total of five-under 139. Han started the day tied for 74th.
Texter didn't roll in quite as many birdies, but the junior played bogey free golf and added birdies on holes 3 and 14, to go with an eagle on hole 5 for a second-round score of 4-under 68. The native of Millersville, Penn., has a 36-hole score of 4-under 140, which has him tied for 42nd.
Eddie Olson is tied for 61st with a total of 2-under 142 (68-74) and he paced the Rebels during the first round, carding a four-under 68 to open the tournament. CJ Gatto (69-76--145, +1) is tied for 84th and freshman Brett Kanda rounds out the Rebel scorecard with a six-over 150 (78-72) and is tied for 118th.
The low 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals. Entering tomorrow's final round, the Rebels are five strokes off the cut line, trailing a group of three teams that have scores of 19-under 557.
UNLV is looking to qualify for its third straight trip to the championship finals as a team and its 17th appearance at the event in the last 19 years. The 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be held May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
