LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Brian Pacheco (Peoria, AZ) was one of 41 players across the country named as part of the official Watch List for the Ray Guy Award, the Greater Augusta Sports Council announced Tuesday.
The Ray Guy is awarded to the nation's top punter each season and determined by a national selection committee made up of sportswriters, college football coaches, sports information directors and past Ray Guy winners.
Pacheco starred at Glendale Community College before signing with the Rebels. He is in his first year as starting punter after playing behind All-MWC booter Kip Facer the last two seasons. Pacheco got off to a stunning start by punting his first UNLV attempt 77 yards en route to averaging 50.2 yards on six kicks at Utah State. After three games he is averaging 43.3 yards per attempt, which ranks 28th in the nation.
Among the statistics used to identify the Ray Guy Award winner are total yardage punted, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, net average, average returned yardage, and percentage of punts not returned. It is also of importance for the award winner to display team leadership, self-discipline, and to have a positive impact on the team's success.
The Ray Guy Award Watch List will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists, to be announced in early November. The national voting body will then vote for the top three finalists who will be announced at the end of November. The award will be presented live on ESPN December 6 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
