LAS VEGAS - No less than 12 of the 21 teams on the UNLV women's tennis 2007-08 schedule were ranked nationally at the end of last season, including four in the top 20, as the school officially released its dates Wednesday.
"This may end up being the most difficult schedule in school history," UNLV ninth-year head coach Kevin Cory said. "We'll face some of the top teams in the nation but with the team we'll have this year, I think we're ready for the challenge."
After participating in a trio of individual tournaments in California in the fall, the team hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 11-13, 2008. A collection of singles and doubles players from top programs Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Oregon are scheduled to battle UNLV's contingent.
The dual-match campaign gets underway by hosting Pacific on January 25. The Lady Rebels, who finished last year ranked 46th, will make only one road trip during their non-conference schedule, visiting Stanford (2nd last year) and then Santa Clara in early February.
Coming to play at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus this season are programs such as Fresno State (14th), Pepperdine (17th), Florida State (19th), Texas A&M (24th), Florida International (30th), Virginia Commonwealth (34th) and Oklahoma State (59th).
The Mountain West Conference schedule opens March 28 with a key trip to BYU (26th) and Utah in Provo. The Lady Rebels then host TCU (38th), New Mexico (67th) and San Diego State (49th). The squad will travel to San Diego for three neutral-site meetings to close the regular-season slate vs. Wyoming, Colorado State and Air Force.
The MWC Championship will be held this spring on the campus of TCU from April 24-27. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 9-10 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place at the University of Tulsa from May 15-26.
