Sept. 21, 2007

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Junior forward Lamar Neagle scored twice in the final nine minutes of the second half to rally the UNLV men's soccer team from a two-goal deficit and give the Rebels a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Drake in the second game of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Friday night from Peter Johann Field. The tie game, which was played in heavy rain and also experienced a 50-minute delay at halftime due to lighting, pushed the Rebels' record to 2-3-2. Drake, ranked sixth in the NSCAA Midwest Region, dropped to 4-2-1. San Diego State won the first game of the Classic, 1-0 over Missouri State.

The Bulldogs controlled the game in the first half, holding a 10-2 shot advantage, and got on the scoreboard in the 31st minute thanks to a goal from Luke Gorczyca. Stevie Shondell was credited with an assist on the score.

UNLV picked up its attack in the second half, and forced Drake goalkeeper Phillip Breuer to make several saves in the opening minutes after halftime, but couldn't get into the scoring column. The Bulldogs then looked to put the game away in the 78th minute when Keith Gorczyca's corner kick found Ted Schleisman in the box, and he quickly unleashed a shot past Rebel goalie Calvin Bailey for the score, and a 2-0 edge.

Less then four minutes later UNLV would cut the lead to just one, as freshman Daniel Cruz dribbled through the box to the left side, and passed behind him to Neagle, who blasted off a shot from 15 yards out for the score in the 82nd minute. With time winding down, UNLV kept attacking, and would score the tying goal with just 45 seconds left in the second half. This time, Andrew Friel deflected the ball towards Cruz, who once again passed off to Neagle who scored from 12 yards out. It was his second goal in nine minutes, marking the first two-goal game of his career. The game would go to two overtimes, with UNLV taking one shot in each, while Drake took one in the first extra period.

Bailey finished with six saves in goal for UNLV, while Breuer posted five for the Bulldogs. Drake finished with a 15-11 edge on shots, while UNLV had a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.

UNLV will finish play in the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday night, facing Missouri State at 7:30 pm, while Drake and San Diego State play in the first game at 5 pm.
