LAS VEGAS - UNLV swimming and diving split a home Mountain West Conference meet on Saturday afternoon at Buchanan Natatorium, as the Rebel men (2-0, 2-0 MWC) topped the Utes 196-98, while the Utah women defeated the Rebels (1-2, 1-2 MWC) by a 179-121 score.
UNLV won all but one event on the men's side, and were paced by five double-event winners. John Mendoza won the 1000 free in 9:25.74 and the 500 free in 4:33.60. Calan Eldridge touched first in both the 100 free (45.83) and 200 free (1:40.84). In the breast events, Andrew Morrell won both with times of 57.29 in the 100 and 2:03.93 in the 200. Nick Blank swam first place times of 1:50.70 in the 200 back and 4:06.04 in the 400 IM. David Seiler touched first in the 100 (49.74) and 200 fly (1:51.21), and Vinne English was the final double-event winner, winning the 1-meter diving with a score of 252.07, and the 3-meter with a score of 261.53. Steven Nelms posted a time of 21.14 in the 50 free for a first place swim. Both relays finished in first, with Jeff Ellingsen, Morrell, Seiler, and Nelms posting a time of 3:22.93 in the 400 medley, while Nelms, Eldridge, Charlie Tapp, and Seiler touched first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:04.74.
Bailey Kuestermeyer highlighted action on the women's side, as she claimed the 500 free in 5:04.84, was first in the 400 IM (4:29.73), and second as well in the 1000 free. Other winners for the Rebel women included Lara Sreibers in the 1000 free (10:28.99), and Rachelle Zuccaro on the 1-meter board (244.64).
Both teams will return to action next weekend, as UNLV will compete in the Nike Cup, held in Long Beach, Calif., from Nov. 20-22.
