LAS VEGAS - The 40th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team played its first match in nearly two weeks but showed no ill-effects from the layoff in posting a 7-0 victory over Illinois State on a cool but sunny Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 5-1 on the season while the Redbirds fell to 2-3.
UNLV began the morning by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva won 8-2 at the top spot; Katy Williams and Anna Maskaljun won 8-1 at No. 2; and Alisa Razina and Nikol Dimitrova won by the same score at No. 3. The hosts only lost one set in singles play as Gantcheva, ranked 30th in the nation, won 6-2, 6-2 over Katri Miller at the top position. Gantcheva improved her season singles record to 15-6, including 5-0 in duals.
Nedeltcheva won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 over Julia Zubkova; Williams won 6-2, 6-1 over Veronique Parke-Bedard at No. 3; and Dimitrova won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 over Carolyne Parent. Maskaljan improved her impressive freshman record to 13-3 overall by rallying past Tanja Hrovatic at No. 5, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) while Adrienn Hidvegi swept Katie O'Riley on court six 6-3, 6-2.
"This was a solid win for our team after two weeks off," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We competed well and now we need to get ready for a tough match on Sunday."
UNLV hopes to earn its first ranked win of the season when it hosts No. 61 Oklahoma State on Sunday beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
