COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - UNLV baseball scored runs in pairs on Friday afternoon, scoring two runs in four of the first five innings to go on to an 8-4 win over Air Force at Falcon Field.
The win improved the Rebels to 21-34 overall and 9-14 in Mountain West Conference games, snapping the squad's six-game losing streak in the process. UNLV starter Marc Baca earned the win, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings, while closer Adam Moser got the final two outs of the game for his sixth save. Air Force dropped to 17-33 on the year, 3-20 in league action, with starter Jake Petro taking the loss, as he gave was charged with all eight runs in 4.1 innings on the mound.
UNLV opened the game by loading the bases with two outs on a hit batter and three straight walks, and Rance Roundy singled up the middle to score two runs. Scotty Berke and Michael Brenly hit RBI singles in the second inning and Jesse Wight hit a two-run single in the third that plated two more runs.
The run-producing single by Wight came after the Falcons had scored three in the bottom of the second on a pair of run-scoring singles to make it a one-run game at 4-3.
In the top of the fifth the Rebels put runners on the corners and Anthony Morel squeezed home the first run of the frame and Wight later added an RBI single, making it 8-3.
Air Forced scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice, but threatened in the bottom of the ninth. The Falcons loaded the bases with just one out, but Moser got a strike out and a ground out to end the game.
Wight finished the game with two hits and three RBI, pacing the UNLV offense, which had 13 hits on the afternoon. Roundy had three hits, drove in two and also scored twice as well for the Rebels. Air Force had 11 hits on the afternoon.
UNLV and Air Force will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch set for 11:00 a.m. (PST) at Falcon Field. It is the final regular-season game for both teams, and for the Rebels, it will be a key game in regards to seeding for the upcoming MWC Tournament, which starts May 20 in Fort Worth, Texas.
