Final Stats
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UNLV baseball fell behind early and could not come back, losing 8-6 and getting swept by Cal Poly in the finale of a three-game non-conference series Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.
UNLV dropped to 19-28 overall on the year while Cal Poly improved to 22-23 overall on the season. Rebel starter Marc Baca (1-3) took the loss, giving up six runs on four hits in two innings of work. Cal Poly starter Steven Fischback (5-3) earned the win and Brian Grening worked the final 2.2 innings to collect the save, his second of the series.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the first and third innings to grab an early 6-0 lead and the closest the Rebels would get would be two runs twice late in the game.
Xavier Scruggs got the Rebels on the board in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, and in the fifth Jared Frierson and J.J. Sferra hit run-scoring singles to make it a 7-3 game. In the sixth the Rebels got a run on a throwing error and another on a ground out by Braden Walker, making it 7-5
Cal Poly extended the lead back to three with a run in the bottom of the frame, but the Rebels loaded the bases loaded with one out and got a run on a Jesse Wight single, making it 8-6. But that would be all UNLV would get, as Braden Walker grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Sferra finished the game with three hits and an RBI and Rance Roundy added two hits as UNLV finished the game with nine on the game. Brent Morel had three hits and scored twice for the Mustangs, which collected eights hits on the afternoon.
UNLV will now begin its final homestand of the year, a five-game stretch that starts against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, with the first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. (PT).
