Flair Gets His Flair

Aug. 15, 2008

REBEL CAMP 2008 - While it may not be 37 little pieces of flair, UNLV senior wide receiver Casey Flair (Anchorage, AK/East HS) had on the Black Jersey at the start of practice Friday morning. The wide out turned in a solid session yesterday and in the process, became the second pass catcher to earn the jersey, joining two-time winner Ryan Wolfe (Santa Clarita, CA/Hart HS).

"It is a great honor to get recognized by the coaching staff with the Black Jersey," Flair said. "It is something that the wide receivers want to keep in our group and that is the mentality we have each practice."

The former walk-on has used a work ethic that is second-to-none to put together a stellar career that finds Flair's name littered all over the Rebel record book. He enters his final campaign having caught at least one pass in 35 consecutive games - or one for every game of his career - for the second-longest active streak in the nation.

Flair, who hauled in 54 balls for 622 yards and three touchdowns as a junior, has already earned his bachelor's degree, in psychology this past May and is working on his master's degree in public administration.

"Casey had a really good practice yesterday and he works hard and does things the right way," UNLV head coach Mike Sanford said.

Junior linebacker Jason Beauchamp (San Diego, CA/Steele Canyon HS) was the defensive selection for the Black Jersey, and he looks to be an anchor in the Rebel linebacker corps this fall. Beauchamp finished eighth on the team last year with 43 tackles, including two for a loss and one quarterback sack.

"Jason has really stepped up his game," Sanford said. "He is playing really well at linebacker and also as a pass rusher coming off the edge."

Senior tight end Ryan Worthen (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde HS), junior offensive lineman Joe Hawley (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS) and junior wide receiver Rodelin Anthony (Immokalee, FL/Immokalee HS) were honorable mentions for the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, senior defensive end Thor Pili (Orem, UT/Timpanogos HS) and junior defensive back Daryl Forte (Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) were also in the running for the Black Jersey.
