LAS VEGAS - After two weeks of preseason practice the 2008 UNLV Volleyball team will get a chance to play against some live competition and familiar faces this Saturday, Aug. 23, when the squad will host its Alumni Gatch. Eight former Rebels will play in the match that will take place at noon in the Cox Pavilion. The match is free and open to the public.
UNLV's 2008 roster is comprised of 18 student-athletes, 10 of which are returning letterwinners. Four starters (Melody Nua, Camille Cunningham, Jessica Walters and Erin Greenwood) return from the 2007 Mountain West Conference championship squad that reached the program's first NCAA Tournament.
Returning to play for the Alumni Team are: Lauren Miramontes (2003-07), Nicki King (2001-04), Michelle Banks (2003-06), Kristin Koochi (2003-06), Tarin Keith (2002-04), Angie Sylvas (1997-99), Wendy Saxton (1996) and Amber Graham (1996-99). The alumni will be coached by Jeff Richard and Leiana Oswald (2000-03).
The Rebels begin the regular season on the road in Tempe, Ariz., at a tournament hosted by Arizona State on Aug. 29-30. UNLV will face Dayton, South Carolina and ASU in the two-day event.
UNLV opens up at home on Sept. 5-6, when they host a tournament in the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels will welcome Wisconsin, Cal State Fullerton and Miami (Ohio) to Las Vegas.
