LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior linebacker/defensive end Jason Beauchamp (San Diego) has been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career, the league announced Monday.
The Steele Canyon High School graduate turned in a dominant effort Saturday to help his school break a 20-game conference road losing streak with a 34-17 victory over New Mexico.
Beauchamp totaled nine tackles, including six solo, to go with two quarterback sacks and a third tackle for loss as well as a forced fumble in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. The Lobos did not score on any of the three series where Beauchamp had a TFL.
Beauchamp now has a career-high 5.5 sacks, which ranks him fourth in the league and 46th in the nation. He is only the second Rebel to earn a player of the week honor this season, joining quarterback Omar Clayton on Sept. 21, and is the first defensive pick since Beauchamp won the same award on Sept. 29, 2008.
San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley and Aztec receiver DeMarco Sampson shared MWC Offensive Player of the Week honors while Utah punter Sean Sellwood was tabbed for special teams.
