LAS VEGAS - Team Scarlet picked up one win and another matchup with Team Black ended in a tie as UNLV baseball continued its Fall Ball schedule over the weekend at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
On Friday the seven-inning game between the two squads ended in a 5-5 tie, with Team Black starter Andy Beresford working four scoreless innings in his first start of the fall. The sophomore gave up two hits, struck out two and walked just one. Cash Thomas hit a two-run double and Brian Gilbertson drove in a pair of runs as well, giving Team Black an early 5-0 advantage.
The bullpen could not hold the lead, as Jordan Lee allowed two runs in the sixth and Nolan Clark gave up three in the top of the seventh. Brandon Bayardi hit a two-run home run in the sixth to spark Team Scarlet, and Hunter Beaty drove in two runs in the seventh to force the tie after Black could not push a run across the plate in the bottom of the frame.
"Andy was in midseason form and it is really encouraging to see the progress he has made," UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith said. "I thought offensively we were unable to capitalize on some opportunities but I thought our situational play was outstanding. Several guys executed the short game very well and we hit behind runners."
Team Scarlet continued Saturday where it left off the game before offensively, scoring 11 runs on eight hits to beat Team Black, 11-3 at Wilson Stadium.
Beaty was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times and using his speed to set the tone on offense for the Scarlet group. Chad Claus drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple, and the run support allowed starter Stephen Singer to settle in and pitch well. Singer gave up just one run in four innings of work before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Team Black got solo home runs from Duncan Satherlie and Rance Roundy, and starter Sean Silva gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. It was actually a 6-3 game heading in to the seventh inning, but Team Scarlet tacked on five runs in the final frame to secure the victory.
"Our starting pitching was sound on Saturday, with both Stephen and Sean pitching well," Gouldsmith said. "Hunter Beaty really sparked Team Scarlet, and his speed pressured the defense all day."
Tuesday the Rebels will hold their Scout Day at Wilson Stadium, with stretching beginning at 1:30 p.m. (PT) and then the team will intrasquad at 3:30 p.m. UNLV will then hold practices Wednesday and Thursday, followed by scrimmages on Friday and Saturday.
