LAS VEGAS - UNLV track and field head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams announced that a pair of high school student-athletes have signed national letters of intent and will compete for the Rebels beginning in the spring of 2010.
Emily Blok of Conifer, Colo., and Kelsey Williamson of Highlands Ranch, Colo., inked during the early signing period, which began on Wednesday.
"These student athletes are great additions to our track and Field program and what we represent," Scott-Williams said. "We have set high standards for the team we are building on the track, in the classroom and as future leaders in our communities. We are excited about the direction in which this team is headed and that these young women have decided to take the journey with us."
Blok is a senior at Conifer High School and was named the 2008 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for Colorado and was a Colorado Sportswoman of the Year Honoree. A five-time Colorado state champion, she won the 100- and 200-meter titles as a sophomore, then repeated in those events a year later while also winning the 400 meters. She has clocked personal bests of 11.79 in the 100, 24.11 in the 200, 55.69 in the 400 and 7.68 in the 60 meters. Blok, who is an honors student and president of the athletics council at CHS, also is an outside hitter on the volleyball team and is active in her school's band.
"Emily is someone who represents the true meaning of student-athlete," Scott-Williams said. "She is an outstanding student, a wonderful person and she will add a wealth of talent to our sprint group."
Williamson is a senior at ThunderRidge High School and she specializes in the 400 and 800 meters for the Grizzlies. Williamson has clocked times of 25.69 in the 200, 56.93 in the 400 and 2:18.99 in the 800, and she ran the anchor leg on TRHS's 4x400 meter relay team that won the state championship in a time of 55.88. Williamson is a member of the National Honor Society and was selected as a 2008 All-American Scholar.
"We are very excited about having Kelsey join the Rebel family," Scott-Williams said. "She will be a key contributor to the team in the 400 and 800 meters."
