Final Stats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - UNLV baseball could not mount a comeback against Cal State Northridge, as the Rebels' fell behind early in a 5-1 loss to the Matadors in a non-conference tilt Tuesday night at Matador Field.

It was a one-run game heading into the seventh inning, but UNLV gave up two runs in the bottom of the frame and then another in the eighth in losing for the sixth straight time, falling to 13-14 overall on the season, including 0-9 on the road. Rebel starter Jeff Urlaub (3-3) took the loss although he worked just two innings in what was his schedule bullpen session leading into his slated start at home against Utah on Friday. CSN improved to 12-14 on the year, with Westley Wright earning the win and Jimmy Jolicoeur picking up his second save of the season.

The Matadors were ahead 2-0 after getting single runs in the first and second when the Rebels scored in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to just one at 2-1. UNLV junior Rance Roundy doubled down the right-field line and then came around to score on Brian Gilberton's single up the middle. After shortstop Anthony Morel reached on an infielder's choice, Bryan Resnick singled, putting two runners on with only one out. Wright snuffed out the rally, though, striking out Chad Claus and Ryan Thornton to end the threat and keep Cal State Northridge in the lead.

Those three hits were part of just five for the entire game by the Rebels, who also committed four errors in the game which lead to four unearned runs.

Richard Gates hit a two-run single in the seventh inning that gave the Matadors some breathing room, and then Tommy Simis doubled in a run in the bottom of the eighth, making the margin 5-1.

UNLV and CSN wrap up their two game series tomorrow, with the first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. (PT), and it brings to a close a seven-game road trip for the Rebels in which they are currently 0-6 on.
