Rebels Take Two From Bears

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball extended its winning streak to four games with a sweep of Northern Colorado in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, winning by scores of 11-1 and 15-2.

With the pair of wins the Rebels move back above the .500 mark at 19-18, and the four-game winning streak is the longest since UNLV rolled to eight wins in a row during its season-opening homestand. Rebel starter Andrew Beresford (2-2) earned the win in game one with eight strong innings and then Corey Hales (2-2) worked four innings to pick up the victory in the second game, which was shortened to seven innings.

In the first game the Rebels blew open a two-run game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-1 advantage, and then pushed four more runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth. UNLV pounded out 17 hits, paced by Scott Berke, Jarred Frierson and Ryan Thornton, who each collected a trio of base knocks. Berke hit his second home run of the season in the game, as he drove in two runs and scored one.

Beresford gave up just three hits and one earned run in picking up the victory, striking out seven and walking three in one of his strongest outings of the year. Northern Colorado scored a run in the top of the sixth, breaking a streak of 14-straight scoreless innings that UNLV pitchers had thrown after Tanner Peters tossed a one-hit shutout on Friday night.

In the second game of the double-dip the Rebel offense scored early and often, pushing runs across the plate in each of the six innings during the seven-inning game. After getting a run in the bottom of the first, UNLV scored four times in the second, once in the third, six times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the second. UNLV again had 17 hits on the evening, including a home run off the bat of Trent Fuller, and the 15 runs were the most the Rebels have scored in a game since a 24-5 win over Butler on March 7.

Berke had three hits and scored three times, while Bryan Resnick collected three hits and three RBI and Chad Claus also had three hits and a trio of runs knocked in.

UNLV wraps up its homestand against Northern Colorado tomorrow, with the first pitch at 1:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, and it brings a close to 10 straight at home for the Rebels.
