LAS VEGAS - As this year's edition of UNLV baseball settles into classes and fall workouts, it brought to a close a successful summer for several Rebel student-athletes.

UNLV junior Richie Jimenez was named the 2009 West Coast League MVP, as he lead the league in hits with 57, hit at a .354 clip, while driving in 20 run for the Corvallis (Ore.) Knights. The slick-fielding shortstop made only six errors while recording 134 assists and posting an impressive .970 fielding percentage, and Jimenez helped lead the Knights to a West Division title.

Rebel seniors Scott Berke, Drew Beuerlein and Rance Roundy played for the Rochester (Wis.) Honkers this summer and the trio helped the squad to the 2009 Northwoods League Championship. Beuerlein and Roundy were also named to the Northwoods League All-Star team and participated in the All-Star game on July 21.

Also, Rebel seniors Jarred Frierson (Academy Barons) and Matt Hutchison (Santa Barbara Foresters) represented UNLV at the 75th National Baseball Congress World Series, which was held in Wichita, Kan.

Frierson was named to the 2009 First Annual California Collegiate League All-Star team, held at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton and in the World Series he started five games, hitting .417, driving in five runs, scoring three times and drawing a walk. Hutchison turned in a strong summer as a reliever, coming out of the bullpen to post six saves and a 4-3 record in 20 appearances with a 1.31 ERA and 26 strikeouts against just seven walks.
