LAS VEGAS - Rance Roundy and Richie Jimenez each hit home runs in a five-run second inning, leading Team Black over Team Scarlet on Wednesday in the first intrasquad scrimmage of Fall Ball for UNLV baseball at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
R.J. Arnold also had a productive day for Team Black, going 2-for-3 at the plate and then working a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Brian Gilbertson started and earned the win, giving up two runs on four hits in his two innings of work.
It was exciting to get back on the field in a game situation," UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith said. "We have so many different faces and you look forward to seeing them in a Rebel uniform. There was definitely some anxiety for some of the new guys."
Team Scarlet did not fold after falling behind, scoring two runs in the second, one in the third and another in the fourth to cut the deficit to just one at 5-4. Kris Kaplan worked a 10-pitch walk and then scored his team's first run in the bottom of the second, and then added a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
Team Black scored the game's final two runs for some insurance, as Scott Berke hit a solo home run in the fifth and then Jimenez singled in a run in the sixth. Team Black finished with 12 hits and did not commit and error while Team Scarlet collected 10 hits and made one error.
"As exciting as it was, we have a lot of work to do," Gouldsmith said. "I am proud of all their efforts to this point, as it is still really early."
