LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's track and field team will participate in a pair of indoor meets this weekend, traveling to compete in the Lobo Challenge on Friday and the New Mexico Invitational on Saturday, with both meets being held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott is excited to have her team compete at the same venue that the 2010 Mountain West Conference indoor championships will be held, and is looking for the Rebels to continue to improve since their first indoor meet.
"This will be our opportunity to get on the same track that we will be competing on at the indoor conference championships," Scott said. "For some it will be a new experience but definitely a great chance for them to get championship ready, and that's what we plan to do."
The Rebels will be sending 19 student-athletes to the two meets, headlined by freshman Emily Blok, who has made a strong debut in her rookie season. Blok, who will be competing in the 60 and 200 meters this weekend, has posted the fifth-fastest times in each event in the Mountain West Conference thus far this season. She will be joined in the sprints by Zadia Bryant, Christine Lowe, Kelsey Williamson and Shahnel Woodley.
UNLV senior Candise Maxwell will be making her season debut in the 60-meter hurdles this weekend, and distance runners Lucy Beuster, Bailey Kuestermeyer, Ali Motor, Sarah Muniz and Brett Zorich will also be competing on the track.
Away from the running lanes, Amanda Bingson, LaShante' Ellison and Danielle Rios will be competing in the weight throw, Davina Collins and Deja Edwards are entered in the long and triple jumps, while Stephanie Schafer will be competing in the high jump.
The Lobo Challenge will start tomorrow afternoon, with the first event the women's long jump at 3:00 p.m. (PT), with the closing event slated to be the women's 4x400 relay at 7:40 p.m. Saturday's New Mexico Invitational kicks off at 7:00 a.m. with the women's long jump and the last event of the day is women's 4x400 meter relay at 1:30 p.m.
