LOS ANGELES - The 41st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost to nemesis Pepperdine for the fourth time in less than two years with a heart-breaking 4-3 defeat in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament Friday night at the L.A. Tennis Center.
Incredibly, the 40th-ranked Waves improved to 14-0 all-time vs. the Lady Rebels.
UNLV won the doubles point and then took leads of 2-1 and 3-2 but Pepperdine rallied to win the final two singles matches for the overall victory.
In doubles, Kristina Nedeltcheva and Jana Albers combined to win 8-4 at the top spot while Adrienn Hidvegi and Nives Pavlovic prevailed 8-6 on court three. With the point decided, the match at No. 2 was halted with UNLV's Anna Maskaljun and Alisa Razina leading 6-5.
Moving to singles play, the Waves struck first with a quick win at No. 6. Hidvegi, however, cruised past Andrea Oates 6-2, 6-2 at the fourth position to put her team back in the lead.
The remaining four matches all went to a third and deciding set. UNLV's got its third victory from the top when star senior Nedeltcheva came back to beat No. 123 Arianna Colffer 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The match would come down to court three where Pavlovic, a freshman, rallied after dropping the first set to Anamika Bhargava to lead 4-2 and then 5-4 in the third. Bhargava, however, won the final three games to win 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 to drop UNLV to 3-2 on the young season.
The Lady Rebels will next play Feb. 12 when they host a doubleheader vs. UC Riverside at 10 a.m. and Utah State at 2 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
