LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Freshman Lucia Batta won twice more in singles Friday to advance to the semifinals of the 2010 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Batta, seeded second, downed BYU's Elle Carney 6-2, 6-1 and then advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win over eighth-seeded Eugenia Kryuchkova of Utah. She will face Nevada, Reno's Michelle Okhremchuk in Saturday's semifinal round, which is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The hosts made an even bigger impression in doubles play, seeing a trio of teams make it through Saturday's action. Jana Albers and Adrienn Hidvegi downed the seventh-seeded team from Denver, 8-6; fourth-seeded Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic downed their competition from Montana State 8-6; and Batta and Anna Maskaljun teamed up to upset the fifth-seeded duo from BYU, 8-6.
Doubles quarterfinals start at 9 a.m. on Saturday while semifinals follow at approximately 11 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
"Our doubles play was really impressive today," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "All three teams had tough matches and were able to reach the final eight. Also, Lucia is playing some great tennis. To be in the semifinals of an ITA regional as a freshman is impressive."
This 114-player event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
