LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV freshman Lucia Batta will play for the singles title of the 2010 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex after another straight-set win on Saturday. The host Lady Rebels will also go for the doubles crown with the senior duo of Jana Albers and Adrienn Hidvegi winning twice to advance.
Batta, seeded second, downed Nevada, Reno's Michelle Okhremchuk 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals. She will take on top seed and 67th-ranked Anastaia Putilina of Utah in Sunday's final, which is scheduled to get underway at noon PT. Admission is free of charge.
In doubles, UNLV was assured of playing in the final, which will start Sunday at 10 a.m., after three quarterfinal victories early in the day. Albers and Hidvegi downed a Montana duo 9-7; Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic teamed up to oust an Idaho pair 8-4; and Batta and Anna Maskaljun upset the third-seeded team from Boise State 8-5.
Moving on to the semifinals, Batta and Maskaljun were eliminated 8-4 by a Putilina and Paige Miles of Utah. The Ute duo, seeded second, will now take on UNLV's Albers and Hidvegi, who ousted their teammates Josifoska and Pavlovic 8-6 to advance.
"We turned in another great day on the courts and having three teams in the doubles semifinals was incredible," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "It's great to see two of our seniors, Adrienn and Jana, in the finals tomorrow. In singles, Lucia continued her outstanding play and is really on a roll heading into the final."
This 114-player event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
