TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 15 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 8-over-par 292, but followed it up with an 11-under 273 during the second round Monday and sit in eighth place at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which is being played at the par-71, 6,793-yard Arizona National Golf Club.
California shot a tournament-low 15-under 269 during the first round, then a 10-under 274 during the second round and leads the field at 25-under 543 after 36 holes. Host Arizona (279-271=550) is in second place, seven shots back at 18-under. Fresno State (284-273=557) is third at 11-under, Pepperdine (284-275=559) is fourth at 9-under, while there is a three-way tie for fifth at 8-under between Texas A&M (283-277=560), New Mexico (283-277=560) and Florida (281-279=560). The Rebels are at 3-under 565.
Colby Smith had five birdies in a bogey-free Round 2 to turn in UNLV's best score of the day at 5-under 66. After a first-round 71, Smith has a 36-hole total of 5-under 137, is tied for seventh individually and trails the leaders by five shots. Smith had three birdies and three bogies during the first round.
New Mexico's John Catlin (66-66) and California's Michael Weaver (64-68) are both tied for the individual lead at 10-under 132. They lead the field by two shots as Arizona's Rich Saferian (68-66) and Fresno State's Bhavik Patel (69-65) are both tied for third at 8-under 134.
Other Rebel players: Derek Ernst (71-69=140, -2, T18th), Brett Kanda (73-71=144, +2, T42nd), Jeremiah Wooding (77-71=148, +6, T55th), Kevin Penner (84-67=151, +9, 62nd).
