ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV senior Bailey Kuestermeyer breaking a school record was among the highlights for Rebel women's track and field at the first full day of competition at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, which is being held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Kuestermeyer finished seventh in the 5,000 meters with an altitude-adjusted time of 17:05.33, which shattered the previous school record of 17:11.74 set by Michele Suszek in 2005. Kuestermeyer ran a leg on the distance medley team that finished sixth with a time of 12:23.72, and she will run in the 3,000 meters during tomorrow's final day of the league meet.
In other top-10 performances for the Rebels in the finals of events on Friday, sophomore Deja Edwards finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 18-5.75 and Amanda Bingson took ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 54-10.00. Overall the Rebels are in ninth place heading into tomorrow's final round, where they will have several chances to score points and move up the standings.
UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott was pleased with her squad's performance on Friday, which also included several student-athletes advancing to Saturday finals.
"Overall we had a good day," Scott said. "We came to compete today and had athletes put up some personal and season-best marks, including Bailey breaking a school record. Tomorrow we have several athletes competing in finals and now they just need to score and battle it out."
UNLV freshman Emily Blok will compete in the 60 and 200 meter finals and will run the lead leg of the 4x400 relay, while Shahnel Woodley will also be running in the 60 meter finals. Candise Maxwell will run in the 60-meter hurdles and Stephanie Schafer in the high jump also should be in the mix to score points on Saturday.
BYU has the team lead after two days of competition with 72 points, while TCU and San Diego State are tied for second with 30 team points and New Mexico is fourth with 25. Utah (23) is fifth, followed by Air Force (19), Colorado State (15), Wyoming (14) and UNLV (6).
