UNLV women's track and field posted several strong performances at the Trojan Invitational on Saturday, as the Rebels had 17 top-10 finishes at the meet which was held in Loker Stadium on the campus of USC.
After taking last weekend off, the Rebels showed little signs of rust in getting back into the swing of things in what is the start of six straight weekends of competition for the team. It actually got started Friday afternoon with sophomore thrower Amanda Bingson breaking her own school record in the hammer, and her teammates picked right up where she left off on Saturday.
"We are very proud of Amanda breaking her own school record," UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott said. "To be performing that well early in the outdoor season is a great sign of what is to come."
On the track is where UNLV made the most headway, with nine student-athletes, along with both relay teams, earning top-10 places.
In the sprinting events, Shahnel Woodley (12.12) and Emily Blok (12.18) finished third and fourth respectively in the 100 meters, while Chauncey David-Jacobs (24.64) came in eighth place in the 200 meters. Kelsey Williamson clocked a 55.66 in the 400 meters and Brett Zorich was timed at 2:17.84 in the 800 meters, earning each athlete a ninth-place finish. Distance runner Lucy Beuster finished fifth in section I of the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:32.03.
Rebel hurdlers Candise Maxwell (14.27) and Rachael Long (14.34) finished fifth and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles, while Christine Lowe (1:03.66) crossed the finish line seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles.
UNLV turned in solid times in the relay events, finishing second in the 4x100 with a time of 46.03 and fourth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:50.62.
Deja Edwards turned in second-place finishes in both the long jump (17-7.5) and triple jump (38-9.50) to highlight the Rebels away from the running lanes. Ria Daniels added a seventh-place finish triple jump with a distance of 35-1.75.
Bingson came in third in the hammer on Friday with her record-breaking mark of 183-5.00 and teammate LaShante Ellison finished 10th with a throw of 151-6.00. Danielle Rios finished fifth in section B of the hammer throw with a toss of 154-7.00.
The Rebels will return to Los Angeles next weekend to compete in the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 27-28.
