March 5, 2010
LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's track and field kicks off the outdoor season by hosting its only meet of the spring, the UNLV Track Classic, this Saturday at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field.
The Rebels will host a field that includes Anchorage-Alaska, Montana State-Billings, Northern Illinois, Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Weber State, as well as several individuals who have entered the meet, which will include both men's and women's athletes.
The first field event of the day is the men's hammer throw, which is slated to get underway at 9:00 a.m. (PT), and the first running event is the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:30 a.m. Saturday's meet will end with the 4x400 meter relay events at 3:50 p.m. (men) and 4:00 p.m. (women), and the final field event is women's shot put, which is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott is excited to transition from indoor to outdoor, as the Rebels will look for a benchmark to use for the rest of outdoor season.
"We are excited about starting the outdoor season on our home facility," Scott said. "This meet will be a great opener to give the team the confidence they need for the rest of the spring. We have good competition coming in to push us and some good early season marks should take place. The UNLV Track and Field Classic is a growing meet. Every year more teams come to Las Vegas to compete and I look forward to this meet being a great early-season competition."
The Rebels will have student-athletes entered in nearly every event, and several will have opportunities to post high finishes on their home track.
In the sprint events, Zadia Bryant, Candise Maxwell and Shahnel Woodley (100 meters), Chauncey David-Jacobs (400 meters), Rachael Long and Maxwell (100-meter hurdles) and Christine Lowe and Erin Straughter (400-meter hurdles) should be in the running for top-10 finishes on Saturday. Distance runners Bailey Kuestermeyer (1,500 meters) and Brett Zorich and Courtney Allen (800 meters) are also athletes to watch on the track.
Rebels in the field to watch for on Saturday included Amanda Bingson and LaShante Ellison in the hammer, Stephanie Schafer in the high jump and Carlotta Island and Ria Daniels in the triple jump.
