GAME NOTES: UNLV at No. 20 Utah
Sept. 11, 2010, at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City
UNLV dropped to 0-8 all-time playing in Salt Lake City.
The Rebels opened a season vs. back-to-back ranked teams for only the second time (2004).
UNLV fell to 5-28 all-time vs. ranked opponents.
The Rebels fell to 9-20 all-time in conference openers, including 2-12 when they came on the road. UNLV has not won a conference-opener that came on the road since downing Utah State in 1994 as part of the Big West Conference.
Senior quarterback Omar Clayton started his first game of the season and came out hot, hitting seven of his first eight pass attempts for 75 yards. Those seven completions went to five different receivers.
Clayton moved into fifth place on UNLV's all-time passing yards list, pushing his total to 5,041 yards after his 217 yard performance against the Utes. He stands 54 yards from moving into fourth place.
Freshman kicker Nolan Kohorst got UNLV on the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter. It marked the first three-pointer of his career after missing his only attempt vs. Wisconsin.
Linebacker Starr Fuimaono forced a fumble that cornerback Will Chandler recovered, giving Chandler his third turnover in the first five quarters of play during the 2010 season. He posted an interception and fumble recovery in Week One. Chandler already matches the team-high of two such recoveries from all of 2009 (Heivaha Mafi).
After scoring 10 points in the first 28 minutes of the game, the Utes scored 14 more within the next three minutes (1:34 left in the second quarter on the first play after recovering a fumble and then 1:13 into the third quarter on a quick drive out of halftime).
Nate Carter's blocked Utah punt was returned 19 yards for a UNLV touchdown by Tim Hasson to mark the first blocked punt return for a score by the Rebels since Rodelin Anthony did it vs. New Mexico on Nov. 28, 2008.
Utah's 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter was the first such play allowed by UNLV since Colorado State's Johnny Walker returned a punt 75 yards on Nov. 19, 2005.
