Final Stats
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (5-9) knocked off their in-state rival the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (6-8) Monday night in the Cox Pavilion by a 3-2 margin. With the victory, UNLV has now won five straight against UNR and owns a 12-7 edge in the head-to-head series. The Rebels won the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-21, 26-28, 21-25, 15-10.
UNLV out-hit UNR by a .108 to .042 in the match, while amassing three more kills (55-to-52) and seven less errors (37-to-44) in 23 less swings (166-to189). UNLV came out hitting well in the first two sets with a .233 in the first and .229 in the second before falling below the .100 barrier in the final three frames. The Wolf Pack only hit above .100 once besides a .270 effort in the fourth.
Tied at two sets piece, the Rebels came out on fire in the fifth. They got the first two points off of consecutive hitting errors by UNR before a kill from Makenzie Moea'i. UNLV cruised from that point to victory slowly building its lead to as much as six points on two different occasions before claiming a five-point advantage, 15-10.
Overall, the match featured 10 lead changes and 20 ties. UNLV took control of the first two sets early on and cruised to wins in both. UNR turned things around in its favor after intermission with wins in the third and fourth.
The third stanza featured the majority of the ties and leads with 12 and seven occurring in the set, respectively. UNLV had a chance to end the third set and the match, as they owned a 24-23 lead, but witnessed UNR knot things up for the first of three ties down the stretch. The Wolf Pack had three set point chances of its own and ultimately claimed the set with back-to-back kills.
The fourth set played out nearly like the first two, but in UNR's favor instead. They built up a short lead and maintained it until the end.
UNLV got a double-double from Kendra Glendenning, as she combined 19 assists with 15 digs for the feat. It is the second double-double for Glendenning on the year.
UNLV's offense was led by Sara Nehf and Candice Thomas, who threw down 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Nehf also chipped in two digs and one solo block, while Thomas added four blocks (one solo), one dig and one assist.
Amanda Alles split setting duties with Glendenning and added 25 assists of her own.
The Rebels came up big defensively with a accumulating 84 digs with five players reaching double-digit figures. Kela Lau Hee led all defenders with a match-high 17 digs. Nile Te'o followed closely behind with 16, while Kelsey Keeler (13) and Sekola Falemaka (12) rounded out the quintet with 10 or more digs.
At the net, UNLV had 13 total blocks to UNR's 16. Madeline Westman led the Rebels with seven (one solo), while Keeler had five (all assisted).
UNR was led by 17 kills from Grace Anxo and 13 from Lindsay Baldwin. Dana Holt and Tatiana Santiago dished out 42 assists between the two of them with Holt claiming 23 to Santiago's 19. Nicole Link led all Wolf Pack defenders with 16 digs.
After playing eight straight matches at home UNLV will hit the road for the first time in over three weeks with two Mountain West Conference contests away from Las Vegas. The Rebels will first mosey on down to Fort Worth, Texas for a Thursday night (7:00 pm CT/5:00 pm PT) affair against TCU that will be aired on The Mtn. After playing TCU, they will head to Albuquerque to face New Mexico on Saturday afternoon (1:00 pm MT/12:00 pm PT).
