The UNLV women's tennis team's Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska advanced in both singles and doubles play following Friday's action on the third day at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Women's Mountain Regional Championships, which are being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Second-seeded Batta, ranked 95th in the nation, and Josifoska, ranked 117th, earned berths into the Saturday's semifinals after each won their respective Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches. Batta disposed of Montana's Laurence Pelchat 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 16 before she knocked off Denver's Caroline Schnell 6-0, 6-1. Josifoska needed a come-from-behind, three-set win over Nevada, Reno's Emma Verberne 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 before she cruised by Wyoming's Veronica Popovici 6-1, 6-4. Both Batta and Josifoska will serve it up Saturday in the semifinals at 1:30 pm with the possibility of meeting in Sunday's final match.
Nives Pavlovic went 1-1 on the day and lost in the semifinals to Utah's Anastasia Putilina, first-seeded and 64th ranked, by set scores of 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Pavlovic earned a right to play in the semis after she went the distance against Denver's Sophia Bergner 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the Round of 16.
In doubles, Batta and Josifoska took care of the tandem of Ginet Pinero and Denise Van Der Ben from New Mexico State quickly with an 8-1 win. The pair will have to win twice on Saturday to advance to Sunday's 10:00 am championship. The Rebel duo of Rumyana Terzieva and Anett Ferenczi-Bako lost to Montana's Heather Davidson and Pelchat 8-3.
More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players are competing this week at UNLV as one of the 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
