LARAMIE, Wyo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (11-12 overall, 3-6 Mountain West) dropped a 3-1 decision (25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12) to the Wyoming Cowgirls (16-9, 6-4) at the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie, Wyo., Thursday evening. The loss was the third straight by the Rebels in the head-to-head series, although they still maintain a 20-15 edge overall against the Cowgirls.
Wyoming out-hit UNLV .280 to .050. The Cowgirls connected on nine more kills (50-41) and committed 19 less errors (15-34) on 15 fewer swings (125-140). UNLV's best hitting efficiency occurred in the third set with a .333 effort. Unfortunately, the third was the only frame that the team hit well, as the attackers tallied figures of .115 or below in the remaining frames. The Cowgirls, on the other hand, hit .171 (fourth set) or better in all four stanzas and topped out at .385 in the second.
The match featured 20 ties and six lead changes with the majority taking place in the third. In all, there were 13 ties and four lead changes in the set won by the Rebels.
UNLV was led by Stephanie Thelen's eighth double-double of the season, as she combined 34 assists with 10 digs to achieve the feat.
The Rebels had four players notch seven or more kills with Daryn Glenn leading the quartet with 10. Makenzie Moea'i followed closely behind with nine, while Madeline Westman (eight kills) and Candice Thomas (seven) rounded out the foursome. Moea'i and Westman chipped in three digs apiece, while Thomas had three assisted blocks.
Defensively, Allison Davies led the team with 17 digs and joined Thelen in double digits.
Wyoming's Jodi Purdy notched a double-double of her own with a match-high 17 kills and team-high 15 digs. Purdy hit .333 and was all over the court for the Cowgirls, as she added four assisted blocks and two assists to her line.
Calli Miller threw down 14 kills for the Cowgirls, and did it without committing an error with a .560 hitting efficiency. Miller chipped in eight digs, four assisted blocks and an assist.
Rachel Keyes and Whitney Smith split the setting duties for Wyoming, as they dished out 21 and 18 assists, respectively. Keyes added eight digs, while Smith had five digs and an ace.
UNLV returns to action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm MT (12:00 pm PT) in Fort Collins, Colo., when they square off against the Colorado State Rams.
