LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team battled back in both games, combining for 31 runs and 32 hits to sweep the University of Maine in today's doubleheader at Wilson Stadium.
Rance Roundy belted three home runs on the day, extending his streak to four straight games with at least one and totaled six RBI to help the Rebels (3-0) remain perfect on the season.
UNLV opened a quick 4-0 lead through three innings in game one only to have Maine answer with a five-run fourth. The Black Bears (0-3) extended their lead to 6-4 before Brandon Bayardi homered and Richie Jimenez drove in Trent Cook with a single up the middle to even the score.
The Rebels exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth powered behind two-run jacks from Roundy and Cook. Maine would capitalize on UNLV pitching woes in the ninth to score five and tie the game at 14-14.
After Bayardi singled to center, the sophomore All-MWC preseason selection stole second and advanced to third on a Tyler Patzalek throwing error. Cook then gave the Rebels their second win of the season with a walk-off single up the middle on a 1-2 pitch from Fran Whitten.
Down 6-5 heading into the eighth inning, the Black Bears offense again came to life, platting six runs on six hits to take a 11-6 lead. The Rebels answered, starting with Roundy's second two-run homer of the day, cutting the lead to 11-8. Maine's bullpen had trouble finding the strike zone, walking six batters in the inning and hitting another, leading to eight more Rebel runs and giving the home team a 16-11 advantage.
Zack Hartman, who picked up the win in his first collegiate appearance in game one, threw a three-up, three-down ninth to secure the sweep. Scott Dysinger was credited with the win, his first on the season.
The weekend series will conclude tomorrow with an afternoon matinee with first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
