OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in a strong first day of action on Wednesday night at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships, which is held at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center.

The 16th-ranked Rebel men won the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, in a new school and conference record time of 1:25.59. That time is not only an NCAA Automatic "A" time, its also the fourth fastest in the nation this year. Swimming on the relay was senior David Seiler, junior Andrew Morrell, sophomore Cody Roberts and junior Steven Nelms. In the next event, UNLV finished second in the 800 free relay, with senior Kyle Virva, freshman Giacomo Gremizzi, junior Tyler Bush and senior Kier Maitland posting a time of 6:34.00, behind BYU's winning time of 6:32.64. The Rebels' time was good for a NCAA 'B' mark.

As the UNLV men did not bring any divers to the meet, the team stands in fifth place after three events with 74 points. BYU is first with 121 points, while Wyoming is second (105), Utah is third (91), TCU fourth (80), and Air Force rounds out the field in sixth (64).

UNLV's women claimed two runner-up relay finishes. The 200 medley relay squad of freshman Orsolya Tompa, senior Lisa Gillespie, freshman Katelyne Herrington and freshman Rachel Dixon turned in a time of 1:39.96 to place second behind Wyoming. Freshman Jessica Heim, junior Friderika Szel, sophomore Brittany Ozar and senior Lara Sreibers teamed up to post a time of 7:15.08 in the 800 free, coming in behind San Diego State. Both times were NCAA 'B' marks.

Also scoring for the Rebels on the night was diver Mariah Skeen, as she placed 11th on the 3-meter board with a score of 274.55.

San Diego State leads the women's standings with 99 points, while New Mexico is two behind in second with 97. BYU is third with 78, UNLV is fourth (74), TCU fifth (72), Utah sixth (68), Colorado State seventh (58), Wyoming is eighth (57), and Air Force is in ninth place with 42 points.
