LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team secured its second straight series win of the 2011 season with a 5-2 win over Central Michigan University here today at Wilson Stadium.
Tyler Iodence (2-0) went the distance, throwing the first complete game of the season, scattering six hits and giving up two runs, one of which was earned and striking out four in the process. Iodence needed just 104 pitches on the day and has thrown at least 8.0 innings in each of his two starts this season.
Rance Roundy led the Rebel offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, scoring twice and walking once while Trent Cook and Richie Jimenez each collected two RBI on the afternoon.
The Rebels (7-1, 0-0 Mountain West) took a 1-0 lead when Scott Dysinger scored on Cook's groundout in the bottom of the first. CMU (3-5) evened the score at 1-1 an inning later when Brendan Emmett doubled to left and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on Eric Wrozek's sac fly to left field.
UNLV regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Roundy singled to lead the inning off and later scored on a Jimenez groundout to short.
Iodence shut the Chippewa offense down over the ensuing four innings, yielding just one hit in that span. Down 3-1 in the seventh, CMU was able to pull within one after Robbie Harman's single through the left side scored William Arnold. That would be the closest the Chippewas would get however as Iodence would not surrender another hit the rest of the way.
Cook's RBI single in the seventh restored the two-run lead at 4-2 and Trevor Kirk's suicide squeeze in the eighth made it a 5-2 game.
The Rebels will hit the road for the first time this season, embarking on a five-game trip that will start in Lubbock, Texas, with two midweek games against Texas Tech University, March 1 and 2. First pitch Tuesday will come at 6:05 p.m. PT.
