NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team's comeback effort from seven runs down feel short, resulting in just its fourth loss this season, 11-6 to Cal State University Northridge here today at Matador Field.
Scott Dysinger (2-2) was charged with the loss after giving up five hits and six runs in just 2.2 innings of work in his third-career start. Rance Roundy, Brandon Bayardi and Ryan Scott each had two hits and an RBI on the day to lead the Rebel offense.
The Matadors built a 7-0 lead after putting up three runs in both the second and third innings and tacking on another in the fifth before the UNLV offense answered back. The Rebels, who had not win at CSUN since the 2007 season opener, suffered their third loss on a Tuesday this season.
The Rebels used the longball to highlight a six-run sixth inning, cutting the deficit to one at 7-6. Trevor Kirk singled and Trent Cook drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Roundy's RBI double down the left-field line scored Kirk and was followed by Casey Sato's groundout RBI groundout, bringing the score to 7-2.
Bayardi doubled in Roundy to make it 7-3 before Richie Jimenez belted his second home run of the season to make it a two-run game. Ryan Scott made it a 7-6 game as his solo homer to right field marked the first time this season the Rebels hit back-to-back home runs.
But that would be as close UNLV would get as the Matadors would explode for a four-run seventh, putting the game out of reach at 11-6.
UNLV will opened Mountain West Conference action this coming weekend, playing host to No. 9 ranked TCU at Wilson Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch Friday is set for 6:05 p.m. followed by a 6:05 p.m. Saturday start and an 11:05 a.m. Sunday finale.
