LUBBOCK, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - Behind a strong first-ever start from righty Scott Dysinger, the UNLV baseball team picked up its first road win of the season, downing Texas Tech, 4-3, here today at Dan Law Field.
Dysinger picked up his first win of the season after throwing 5.2 innings, giving up two runs while striking out four batters. Zack Hartman threw two innings of relief, yielding just one hit while striking out one to earn his second save of the season.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Rebels offense broke free in the third, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead.
Travis Feiner and Remington Pullin led off with back-to-back singles to jump start the rally. Feiner scored on Trevor Kirk's single to left, making it 1-0 Rebels. Following Richie Jimenez's sacrifice bunt that advanced both runners, Rance Roundy's RBI single to right was followed by a two-RBI base hit to left by Brandon Bayardi.
Dysinger continued to cruise through the early innings, going three straight innings without allowing a Red Raider to reach base.
Reid Redman led off the Texas Tech sixth with a double to left center, breaking up Dysinger's no-hit bid. The junior righty was then able to retire the next two batters before running into trouble. Kelby Tomlinson singled to left, driving in Redman to make it a 4-1 game before UNLV head coach Tim Chambers turned to the pen.
Brady Zuniga came on in relief and gave up a two-run homer to Barret Barnes, bringing the Red Raiders within one at 4-3 before getting Nick Popescu to ground out to short to end the inning.
Hartman came in the eighth, retiring the first two batters he faced before giving up a single to Tomlinson. Hartman was then able to get Barnes to pop up to Pullin to end the inning and Red Raider threat.
Hartman returned in the ninth, striking out Popescu and getting Stephen Hagen to fly out to left field for the first two outs. Hartman then hit Duke von Schamann, bringing the winning run to the plate in David Paiz. Ahead 1-2 in the count, Hartman was able to get Paiz to fly out to center to secure the win and series split.
The Rebels will be back in action this weekend as they continue their road trip with a three-game set against in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Friday, March 4. First pitch against the Wolf Pack is slated for 2 p.m. in Reno.
