LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 52nd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its Mountain West Conference schedule with a 6-1 win over No. 68 Wyoming on a hot and sunny Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels, who were in action for the first time since March 16, improved to 12-4 overall while the Cowgirls dropped to 10-5 (0-2).
Wyoming actually opened the morning by winning two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. UNLV's only victory came at the No. 2 spot where Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun won 8-2.
In singles play, the hosts rallied in a big way, winning every match, including five in straight sets.
Batta, ranked 110th, swept Veronica Popovici 6-1, 6-3 at the top of the lineup; Aleksandra Josifoska downed Alexandra Kovacs 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; Nives Pavlovic defeated Simona Synkova 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Adrienn Hidvegi downed Rebecca Berger 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4; Jana Albers won a super-tiebreaker over Kim van Ginkel on court five, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4); and Maskaljun defeated Carly Van Hollen 7-5, 6-1 at the sixth spot.
UNLV is back on the courts tomorrow when it hosts Colorado State starting with doubles play at 10 a.m.
