LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team wrapped up regular-season action with a 6-0 loss today to San Diego State University at Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels (33-23, 10-13 Mountain West) honored eight seniors in their final home game in a Rebel uniform prior to the start of the series finale. Hunter Beaty, Scott Berke, Trevor Clausen, Travis Feiner, Max Javate, Richie Jimenez, Rance Roundy and Cash Thomas were presented with a framed jersey by first-year haed coach Tim Chambers.
Javate (5-2) worked around a two-out single and leadoff walk in the first and second innings before retiring the San Diego State (21-34, 11-13 Mountain West) side in order in the third.
SDSU's TJ Kendzora was equally as impressive, allowing just one hit through the first four innings; a leadoff double by Cash Thomas in the third.
The Aztecs opened up the scoring in the fourth thanks in part to two Rebel errors on the same play. Dillon Bryant's sacrifice bunt was fielded by Feiner, but an errant throw to first allowed him to reach safely. Jomel Torres advanced to third on the throwing error and then made his way home when Beaty's throw from across the diamond was off, giving San Diego State a 1-0 lead. Ben Vasko's RBI single to left two batters later made it a 2-0 ballgame.
SDSU added two more in the fifth and sixth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Thomas collected his second hit of the day off Kendzora in the fifth, but the Rebels could not take advantage.
Kendzora finished the day going 8.0 innings and giving up just two hits while striking out four. Ryan Wynveen came on in the ninth, giving up a leadoff single to Trent Cook, but was able to get out of the inning and secure the win for SDSU.
UNLV will be back in action next week as they enter the Mountain West Conference Championship as the No. 5 seed. The Rebels will open up Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
