LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Men's swimming standout Cody Roberts has been named the UNLV Sportsman of the Year for 2010-11, while track & field star Amanda Bingson won the Sportswoman of the Year award, UNLV Athletics announced Tuesday.
Roberts was a sophomore this past school year and is a native of West Richland, Wash. He was named the 2011 Mountain West Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual titles and leading four UNLV relay teams to first-place swims at the MW Championships.
Roberts helped the Rebels win a seventh-straight conference championship, and then led UNLV to a school-record 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in March after swimming on four top-16 relays, including the eighth-place 200 medley relay to earn Relay All-American Honors. Roberts also earned honorable mention All-America honors by placing 14th in the 100 fly.
Bingson was a junior this past school year and is from Las Vegas. She earned All-America status in the hammer throw after finishing fourth at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships prior to competing at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Bingson finished first overall at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary and owned the top distance thrown combined between the East and West Regionals.
Bingson claimed her second consecutive title in the hammer throw with a toss of 228-6 (69.65m) and earned all-conference honors as well as the MW's Women's Outstanding Performance Award. She broke the UNLV program record in the hammer throw on three different occasions with the final one coming at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational, which saw her finish first overall and set a new stadium record with a toss of 229-0 (69.79m).
Bingson was named the MW's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week on March 22, after setting a new meet record at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational with a throw of 224-8 (68.47m). In the fall, she earned All-MW recognition for finishing second in the weight throw at the 2010 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championship.
The UNLV Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards are presented annually to the athletics department's top male and female athletes, taking only athletic performance during the past year into account.
