COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNLV men's golf team is in second place, just two shots off the lead, at 15-under 561 after the first day of play at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which is being held at the Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course (par 72, 7,363 yards). The Rebels turned in scores of 4-under 284 and 11-under 277 on Sunday.
Colorado leads the field at 17-under 559 (276-283). Colorado State is in third, nine shots behind Colorado and seven shots behind UNLV, at 8-under, while Denver is fourth at 2-under and Ball State is fifth at 1-under. The tournament features 19 teams.
Four UNLV players are in the top 12 as sophomore Nicholas Maruri leads the way, just one shot off the lead, at 6-under 138. He shot a career-low 4-under 68 during the first round, then followed that up with a 2-under 70 in the second round. He is in a three-way tie for second place. Colorado State's Zahkai Brown leads all individuals at 7-under 137 (66-71).
Rebel senior Derek Ernst is tied for sixth at 4-under 140 (71-69), while junior Kevin Penner is tied for ninth at 3-under 141 (74-67) and sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 12th at 2-under 142 (71-71). Freshman Carl Jonson is tied for 50th at 4-over 148 (75-73).
The tournament has a total of 100 golfers and will conclude on Monday with 18 holes. Play will begin at 7:30 a.m. MT with tee times off holes Nos. 1 and 10.
