LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team will be in action this week as it will compete at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1. The tournament will be held at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course (par 72, 7,248 yards) in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday. UNLV will keep the same lineup that was victorious in its season-opener in senior Derek Ernst, junior Kevin Penner, sophomore Blake Biddle, freshman Carl Jonson and sophomore Nicholas Maruri. The team won the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational title after a one-hole playoff last week. Penner was co-medalist.
The 16-team field for this week's tournament includes Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico, New Mexico State, North Texas, Northern Colorado, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, UT-San Antonio and Wyoming.
UNLV did not play in last year's Tucker Invitational, which was won by San Diego State at 10-over 874. There were three teams within four shots of first place. There was a three-way tie for medalist honors at 4-under 212. UNLV's last appearance in the Tucker Invitational was in 2009, as the Rebels blew out the field that year, winning the tournament by 16 shots at 21-under 843. Ernst and Rebel teammate Colby Smith each tied for medalist honors at that event at 8-under 208.
