LAS VEGAS - Players from some of the top college programs in the United States, including host UNLV, will gather in Las Vegas this weekend for the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
Individual competitors will be supplied by teams that include all of the top five in the season's initial ITA rankings: No. 1 Florida, No. Stanford, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 UCLA. Also sending contingents will be No. 16 USC, No. 19 Arizona State and Oregon. Host UNLV, ranked 36th nationally, will add five singles players and three doubles teams to the field.
Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST on Friday and Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free. The event features two flights each of both singles and doubles along with consolation rounds.
An impressive field of no less than 15 ranked individuals and four of the sport's top-25 ranked doubles teams are scheduled to compete. The singles draw is set to feature top-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford as well as four other top-20 players: No. 8 Robin Anderson of UCLA, No. 16 Lauren McHale of North Carolina, No. 18 Sabrina Santamaria of USC and No. 19 Zoe Scandalis of USC. Doubles will be led by Stanford's top-ranked tandem of Burdette and Nicole Gibbs and USC's third-ranked duo of Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian.
Last year's event saw USC's Maria Sanchez take two titles. In the top flight of singles, she defeated second-seeded Olivia Janowicz of Florida, 6-3, 6-0. In doubles, she teamed with Kaitlyn Christian to double up UCLA's McCall Jones and Maya Johansson 8-4.
