LAS VEGAS - The nation's top-ranked college tennis player was upset in three sets in the Flight One singles championship on the final day of the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
USC's 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded freshman Zoe Scandalis lost the first set but was able to rally past Stanford's Mallory Burdette, ranked and seeded No. 1, to take the crown, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The top flight of doubles was won by UCLA's fourth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Pamela Montez and Courtney Dolehide, who eked by Duke's Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfeld.
Host UNLV, which was eliminated from the tournament on Saturday, will open its dual-match season by hosting New Mexico State on Friday beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. admission to all matches if free of charge.
