MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's swimming team is tied with Wyoming for the team lead with 74 points after the first day of action at the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Wednesday night at East Los Angeles Community College. The four-day meet continues Thursday before concluding on Saturday.
The Rebels claimed the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, in a new MPSF championship record time of 1:27.24. Swimming on the relay was senior Charlie Tapp, senior Andrew Morrell, junior Cody Roberts and senior Steven Nelms. Wyoming took second in the event.
The night's other event was also a relay, the 800 free. UNLV finish in second place, behind Wyoming. Making up the UNLV squad was freshman Coleman Allen, freshman Balint Batka, sophomore Giacomo Gremizzi and senior Tyler Bush, and they posted a time of 6:32.33, a NCAA 'B' standard.
Following UNLV and Wyoming in the standings was Hawaii and CSU Bakersfield, both with 60 each for third place. BYU is fifth with 56, while North Dakota and Seattle are tied for sixth with 48. The final two teams are Air Force in eighth (30) and Pacific in ninth (22).
