MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's swimming team stands in third place after the second day of action finished on Thursday night at the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Wednesday night at East Los Angeles Community College. The four-day meet continues Friday before concluding on Saturday.
The Rebels were tied for first coming into day two, but saw Wyoming and BYU move ahead thanks to strong performances from both teams in the 1-meter diving. UNLV did win one event on the night, claiming its second relay victory of the meet by winning the 400 medley relay in a new MPSF meet record time of 3:14.29. Making up the relay squad was freshman Coleman Allen, sophomore David Szele, junior Cody Roberts and senior Steven Nelms.
In the night's first event, the 500 free, freshman Joe Riggert was UNLV's top finisher, placing third in 4:25.52, while classmate Matt Roe placed eighth in 4:30.30. Also scoring in the event was freshman Balint Batka (ninth) and senior Tyler Bush (14th).
The next event was the 200 IM, and again a Rebel finished in third place, as sophomore Giacomo Gremizzi finished in a NCAA 'B' provisional time of 1:48.42. Sophomore Brandon Meier added a 15th place swim in the event.
In the 50 free, senior Charlie Tapp touched the wall in third place in 20.34, behind a pair of Hawaii swimmers and just .05 seconds off a 'B' time. UNLV had four score in the consolation heat, as Szele was ninth, Nelms 10th, Roberts 14th and senior Andrew Morrell 15th.
Wyoming finished the night with 243 points for first place, while BYU is second with 213 and UNLV is third with 208. In fourth is CSU Bakersfield with 166, Hawaii is fifth (156), Seattle sixth (105), North Dakota seventh (90), Air Force eighth (79), and Pacific rounds out the field in ninth (46).
