ALBUQUERQUE (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team sits in a sixth-place tie with Boise State with 32 points apiece after the first full day of action at the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque. UNLV got second-place finishes from two individuals and its distance medley relay team, which ran a time of 12:03.36. Amanda Bingson finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 65-2 (19.86m), while Ashley Henry was the runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5-9.25 (1.76).
San Diego State leads the eight-team contingent with 47 points. New Mexico (42 points), TCU (41) and Air Force (40) are separated by two points and bunched up in second through fourth place. Colorado State is fifth (35), while Wyoming (four) sits behind UNLV and BSU in eighth.
The distance medley relay team was comprised of Laura Affeld, Lindsay Roach, Brett Zorich and Alison Bartosch, who finished behind a quartet from Air Force in a roaring Albuquerque Convention Center.
Danielle Rios joined Bingson in the top three of the weight throw finishers with her distance of 63-8.75 (19.42m).
Besides running in the distance medley relay, Zorich and Affeld qualified for tomorrow's 800m final after their fourth- (2:13.40) and ninth-place (2:14.29) finishes. Kelsey Williamson took second in the event with a time of 2:12.77, and gives UNLV a third of the finalists in the 800m.
Emily Blok and Secoral Yanez were two Rebels that qualified for two finals each Saturday. Blok ran the fastest time in the preliminary heats of the 200m (24.02) and the second-quickest in the 60m (7.44). Yanez, on the other hand, was third in both the 200m (24.59) and the 400m (55.81).
Two others that will compete on Saturday are Erin Morris in the 60m hurdles and Zadia Bryant in the 60m. Both finished fifth in their respective events with Morris running 8.66, while Bryant was timed in 7.67.
Saturday's action begins at 9:45 am on the field with the women's shot put. The women's 60m hurdles start the track's slate of events at 10:45 am.
