LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 51st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team downed New Mexico 6-1 in a conference matchup on a hot Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 12-7 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West while the Lobos fell to 7-8 and 0-3 in league play.
The visitors actually scored first by taking two of three doubles matches. UNLV's only success came at No. 2 where Lucia Batta and Manon de Lanlay won 8-2 over Michaela Oldani and Kristin Eggleston.
Moving to singles play, the Lady Rebels won three quick matches to take a 3-1 lead. Aleksandra Josifoska downed Susanna Kuuttila 6-1, 6-3 at the second spot; Nives Pavlovic defeated Eggleston 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; and de Lanlay won 6-1, 6-4 over Maria Sablina on court four.
The final three matches, however, all went to three sets. Batta eventually finished first, clinching the team victory with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win over Bezdickova at the top of the lineup. Batta improved her sophomore record to 16-2 in duals and 26-8 overall.
Anett Ferenczi-Bako outlasted Alyssa Caffey 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 at the fifth position and Ella Bourchier rallied to down Nikolina Grbac 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 on court six to close the match.
The Lady Rebels return to the courts Sunday when they host No. 45 TCU beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
